The Ultimate Shelling Guide to Marco Island: 3 Days of Seashell Hunting Paradise
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking along pristine beaches with a shell bag in hand, hoping to find that one perfect treasure, then Marco Island needs to be on your travel bucket list.
As someone who is completely obsessed with beachcombing and shelling, Marco Island had been calling my name for years. Between the famous shell-covered beaches, the incredible 10,000 Islands, and the possibility of finding the elusive Junonia shell, I knew this would be a trip to remember.
Spoiler alert: I didn’t find a Junonia… but I found plenty of other amazing treasures!
Here’s exactly how we spent three shell-filled days in Marco Island.
Day 1: South Beach Shelling Adventure
After arriving in Marco Island, we checked into the charming Olde Marco Island Inn. If you’re looking for modern luxury, this probably isn’t your place. But if you love quaint Old Florida vibes, colorful cottages, and a laid-back atmosphere, you’ll absolutely love it. Plus, it’s only a few minutes from South Beach, making it the perfect home base for shelling adventures.
Before heading to the beach, make sure you check the local low tide schedule. Trust me, shelling is always best around low tide.
We drove over to the closest public parking area at Marco Island South Beach Public Parking:

Unfortunately, the lot was completely full when we arrived, so we headed over to the nearby Turtle Lot instead:

It required a slightly longer walk, but it wasn’t bad at all.
Once we made it through the public beach access, we headed south toward the jetty. This ended up being one of my favorite spots of the entire trip.
We spent some time snorkeling around the rocks and immediately started finding treasures. Among our finds were:
- Florida Fighting Conchs
- Lightning Whelks
- Shark Eyes
- Sand Dollars
The water was clear, the weather was beautiful, and there is something incredibly exciting about spotting a shell underwater and realizing it’s still perfectly intact.
After a full afternoon of shell hunting, we headed back to the hotel with sandy feet and happy hearts.
Day 2: 10,000 Islands Shelling Adventure & Tigertail Beach Sunset
The next morning we woke up early for what would become the highlight of the trip.

A quick warning before you go…
BEWARE OF THE MOSQUITOES.
And when I say mosquitoes, I mean SOOOOOO many mosquitoes.
The dock area was absolutely swarming when we arrived. Thankfully, Captain Marco came prepared with bug spray and probably saved us from becoming an all-you-can-eat mosquito buffet.
Once we were underway, everything was perfect.
Captain Marco took us to three different islands throughout the 10,000 Islands in search of the famous Junonia shell. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to find one this time, I found plenty of incredible shells to add to my collection, including:
- Angel Wings
- Shark Eyes
- Alphabet Cones
- Sand Dollars
- King Crown Conchs
- Massive Quahogs
Every island felt like a treasure hunt. Just when I thought I had found my favorite shell of the day, another one would appear.
One of the most magical moments happened on our ride back when a couple of dolphins decided to play in our wake. Watching them jump and glide beside the boat was the perfect ending to an unforgettable morning.
After returning to Marco Island, we spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool at the Olde Marco Island Inn and sorting through our growing shell collection.
That evening, we headed to a charming Italian restaurant called Caio Bella.
The bruschetta was absolutely delicious, and if you’re an Aperol Spritz fan like I am, don’t skip one here. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of shelling.
Sunset at Tigertail Beach
After dinner, we made our way to Tigertail Beach to catch sunset and do a little more shell hunting during low tide.
Let me just say this:
Tigertail Beach is an EXPERIENCE.
There are two ways to reach the main beach area:
- Walk roughly a mile around the lagoon.
- Swim through the lagoon.
Naturally, we chose the adventure route.
I had read several reports saying the lagoon was only knee-deep in places.
That was not our experience.
The lagoon was well over four feet deep in the section we crossed, meaning we had to fully swim across. Thankfully, it only took about thirty seconds, but it definitely caught us by surprise!
Once we made it through, we headed north toward Sand Dollar Spit.
The shelling was fantastic, and the scenery was absolutely stunning. As the sun began setting over the Gulf, the sky lit up with beautiful shades of orange, pink, and gold.
There is just something magical about walking along the shoreline at sunset while searching for shells.
It was the perfect ending to our second day in Marco Island.
Day 3: One Last Taste of Marco Island
Sadly, our final morning arrived far too quickly.
If you have extra time before leaving Marco Island, I highly recommend taking a boat ride to Keewaydin Island or squeezing in one last shelling session at South Beach or Tigertail Beach.
Since we needed to hit the road, we stopped for breakfast at Hoot’s Breakfast & Lunch.
The rye bread was absolutely delicious and exactly what we needed before beginning our drive home.
As we packed up our shells and loaded the car, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for such an incredible trip.
Between snorkeling at South Beach, exploring the 10,000 Islands, swimming across Tigertail Lagoon, and watching dolphins play beside our boat, Marco Island completely exceeded my expectations.

- Always check low tide times before heading to the beach.
- Bring a mesh shell bag.
- Wear water shoes.
- Pack bug spray for boat excursions.
- Snorkel around the South Beach jetties.
- Visit Tigertail Beach during low tide.
- Book a shelling tour to the 10,000 Islands.
- Keep your eyes open—you never know when you’ll spot your dream shell!
Even though the elusive Junonia escaped me this time, I already know I’ll be back.
And maybe next trip, that Junonia will finally have my name on it.
