The Perfect Long Weekend in Cancun: 7 Amazing Things to Do in Cancun, Mexico
When people think of Cancun, they often picture endless turquoise water, white sand beaches, and all-inclusive resorts. While those things are absolutely worth the hype, Cancun offers so much more than just a beach vacation.
This was my second trip to Cancun, Mexico, and somehow it was even more amazing than the first. Every time I visit, I discover something new—whether it’s a hidden cenote, a thrilling adventure park, or a breathtaking view that makes me stop and soak it all in.
If you’re planning a long weekend in Cancun (or even a full week!), here’s my guide to the best things to do in Cancun and how to make the most of your trip.
Where to Stay in Cancun
For this trip, we stayed at the beautiful Ocean Coral & Turquesa Resort, an all-inclusive resort conveniently located just a short drive from Cancun International Airport.

One of my favorite things about this resort was the variety of pools and the gorgeous private beach. After long days of exploring, it was the perfect place to relax with a tropical drink in hand while listening to the waves crash along the shore.
If you’re looking for a Cancun resort that offers easy access to excursions while still providing a relaxing beach getaway, this is a fantastic option.
1. Spend a Day at Xcaret Park
If you only do one excursion during your Cancun vacation, make it Xcaret.
Located in Quintana Roo, about an hour from Cancun’s hotel zone, Xcaret is an eco-archaeological park featuring more than 50 attractions and experiences.
I’ve traveled to more than 15 countries, and honestly, Xcaret remains one of the most unique attractions I’ve ever visited.
My Favorite Attraction: The Underground Rivers
The underground rivers are unlike anything I’ve experienced anywhere else in the world.
These natural rivers wind through a network of caves and tunnels, with occasional openings that allow beams of sunlight to shine through. Floating through these ancient limestone passages feels almost surreal.
I could honestly spend an entire day exploring the underground rivers alone.

2. Explore a Cenote
One of the most unforgettable experiences in the Yucatán Peninsula is visiting a cenote.
Cenotes are naturally occurring sinkholes formed when limestone collapses and exposes underground freshwater pools. Beyond their natural beauty, they hold deep cultural and spiritual significance.
The ancient Maya believed cenotes connected the heavens, Earth, and the underworld. These sacred sites were often used for ceremonies and offerings dedicated to Chaac, the Mayan god of rain and fertility.
Whether you’re swimming, snorkeling, or simply admiring the crystal-clear water, visiting a cenote is a must-do experience in Cancun.
3. Sail to Isla Mujeres on a Catamaran
Few things scream “Cancun vacation” more than sailing across the Caribbean Sea on a catamaran.
A catamaran excursion to Isla Mujeres combines adventure, relaxation, and some of the most beautiful water I’ve ever seen.
Along the way, many tours include snorkeling opportunities at:
- Manchones Reef
- MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte), the famous underwater museum featuring statues
Once you arrive on Isla Mujeres, you’ll be greeted by stunning turquoise water that almost looks photoshopped.
Spend the afternoon:
- Swimming
- Shopping local markets
- Enjoying fresh food and tropical drinks
- Relaxing on the beach
The water around Isla Mujeres is some of the most beautiful water I’ve seen anywhere in the Caribbean.
4. Dance the Night Away at Coco Bongo
Cancun has no shortage of nightlife, but Coco Bongo is in a league of its own.
It’s not just a nightclub.
It’s not just a show.
It’s somehow both at the same time.
From acrobats flying overhead to tribute performances, confetti explosions, balloon drops, music, dancing, and nonstop energy, Coco Bongo feels like a Vegas-style production mixed with an epic dance party.
The show typically runs from around 11 PM to 3 AM, but I highly recommend arriving between 9 PM and 10 PM to secure a good viewing spot.
A few tips:
- Wear comfortable shoes.
- General admission is standing-room only.
- Drinks are included.
- Prepare for sensory overload—in the best possible way.
5. Visit Chichén Itzá
No Cancun travel guide would be complete without mentioning Chichén Itzá.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Highlights include:
- Temple of Kukulcan (El Castillo)
- Great Ball Court
- Temple of the Warriors
- El Caracol Observatory
Walking through the ancient city while learning about Mayan history is an incredible experience.
Yes, it’s a bit of a drive from Cancun, but it is absolutely worth the journey.
6. Take a Day Trip to Tulum
Located about 90 minutes south of Cancun, Tulum offers the perfect mix of history, beaches, nature, and adventure.
One of the most iconic sights in Mexico is the ancient Mayan ruins perched atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
Inside Jaguar National Park, visitors can explore:
- El Castillo
- Ancient fortifications
- Archaeological sites
- Scenic walking trails
Tulum is also famous for its beaches, including:
- Playa Paraíso
- Playa Las Palmas
- Playa Pescadores
- Tulum Beach
If you’re a cenote lover, you’re in luck. The Tulum area is home to numerous cenotes, each offering something different, from cave diving and snorkeling to cliff jumping and swimming.
Don’t miss Yal-Ku Lagoon, a beautiful snorkeling spot where freshwater and saltwater ecosystems meet.
7. Shop Like a Local at Mercado 28
For a break from beaches and excursions, head to Mercado 28.
This colorful local market is packed with:
- Souvenirs
- Handmade crafts
- Jewelry
- Clothing
- Local food
- Tequila
One thing to know before you go: bargaining is expected. Don’t be afraid to politely negotiate prices—you may be surprised by the deals you can score.
I always enjoy wandering through the market, chatting with local vendors, and picking up unique souvenirs that remind me of my travels long after I return home.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Cancun
After visiting Cancun twice, I can confidently say that it offers something for every type of traveler.
Whether you’re floating through underground rivers at Xcaret, swimming in a sacred cenote, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Isla Mujeres, dancing until 3 AM at Coco Bongo, exploring ancient Mayan ruins, or relaxing on a pristine beach, Cancun delivers unforgettable experiences at every turn.
If you’re planning a long weekend in Cancun, these seven activities will give you the perfect balance of adventure, culture, relaxation, and fun.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ll already be planning your next trip before your plane even takes off.
